Another Successful Visiting Day!

Sunday, July 15th, 2012

The Camp Starlight 2012 Visiting Day was a great success enjoyed by all.  The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for a day spent picnicking by Starlight’s beautiful lake.  In fact, some couldn’t resist taking a boat out onto the water to enjoy a view of Starlight from the lake, while others engaged in friendly games of basketball or tennis matches.  Our Camp Starlight dance team members also showed off a bit for their parents in a very entertaining and impressive dance exhibition.

Visiting Day here at Camp Starlight is always one of the most special days of the year.  It’s wonderful to see all of our families together, soaking in the scenery and taking advantage of the activities we offer here on our beautiful campus.   Thanks to all of our families, once again, for making yet another Visiting Day a tremendous success!

Visiting Day is upon Us!

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Can you believe it’s almost Visiting Day already?  We can’t! As usual, it feels as though someone pushed a fast forward button.  It seems like just yesterday we were all hugging and greeting each other on Opening Day.  However, the campers are ready (and so are we) to greet parents and grandparents for what is always a very special day each summer.  The campers have been very busy finishing up Arts & Crafts projects for parents to take home, making note of all of the things they want to talk about and places around camp that they want to take their parents on the big day, and, most importantly (according to the campers), making those infamous Visiting Day wish lists…Speaking of those lists, we thought this would be a good opportunity to toss in a bit of food for thought (okay, we admit it…pun intended) when you’re scanning through multiple pages of delectable wishes…

Moderation is always good.  Cinderella had until midnight at the ball.  Campers have less than two days to eat all of the goodies their parents bring them.  Not that the local charities to which we always donate the extras mind, but, realistically, do you really think your camper—even with the help of his or her bunkmates—can eat several 5lb bags of M&M’s in that amount of time?

Yes, we have NO TREE NUTS OR TREE NUT PRODUCTS!  The capitalization and underlining are not typos.  We want everyone to have fun on Visiting Day but we take food allergies very seriously.  That means no coconut, pesto, marzipan, or Nutella (yes, a moment of silence please) in addition to the very obvious peanut butter—or any nut butter for that matter.  We won’t post the entire list because we can’t even pronounce some of them, but if you have questions, here is a list of common tree nuts that most people can pronounce:

Almond                Beechnut            Brazil nut

Bush nut              Butternut            Cashew

Chestnut             Coconut               Filber

Ginko nut            Hazelnut              Hickory nut

Lichee nut           Macadamia nut Nangai nut

Pecan                    Pine nut               Pistachio

Shea nut              Walnut

Your child will attempt to use you as a human ATM for cash to keep in the bunk.  Resist the urge to dispense.  When money goes missing in the bunks, we have no way to tell if it’s actually missing, hiding in a pocket somewhere, or spent but forgotten, because we never had any record of it coming into camp to begin with.  If you find yourself reaching for your wallet, add the funds to your child’s camper account.  Trust us.  That really does make the most sense.  There is nothing to spend money on here at camp anyway, and we give campers spending money from their camper accounts when they go on trips.

Trips…If your child is a Senior going to Canada, he or she will need a passport.  If you haven’t already, please remember to bring it.  The CAs head to California on Monday.  Visiting Day is your last chance to pad their spending money accounts if necessary.

And there are a few tips for making Visiting Day successful for everyone.  Safe travels, and can’t wait to see everyone on Saturday!

“Get to Know” Jackie, Senior Girls Division Leader

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

This week for their “Get to know…” challenge, the Senior girls got to know, Jackie, the Senior girls Division Leader.  Here is what they learned:

She is a former Camp Starlight camper and has been at camp for twelve years.  She took a few years off, though.  Had she not, this would be her fifteenth year.
Her first bunk as a camper was Bunk 4, which is now Bunk 5.  She was an Upper Junior.

Faves list…

Camp Meal: Chicken Pitas

Thing About Camp: The environment.  She likes the seclusion and that camp is a safe place.  She also likes that people learn and do things that they wouldn’t anywhere else.

Silent Storm Silent Disco Comes to Camp Starlight

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

It could have been a scene from Big Bang Theory or Impractical Jokers: Camp Starlight campers and staff dancing to…silence.  But it was actually one of the newest up and coming party trends called silent disco powered by Silent Storm Sound System.  Yes, you heard us correctly.  Silent disco.  No, it’s not a sacred ritual in memoriam to what some might call John Travolta’s best years.  It’s a way to make sure that no one thinks the playlist is bad.  Everyone was given a headset that allowed them to choose their own tunes and dance the night away without decibel levels to cause vibrations which measure on the Richter scale throughout Starlight, Pennsylvania.

We won’t lie.  Silent disco is not only tremendous fun but it’s a bit comical, too.  Watching a roomful of people each dancing without hearing the sounds behind the moves made for a night of hilarity and awesome times!  It was a huge hit with everyone.  In fact, it was still the subject of conversation at breakfast the next morning for many of our campers and staff.  The general consensus is that everyone can’t wait to try it again!  We definitely raised the roof…but this time we didn’t have to crank up a few amplifiers as high as they could go.

Camp Starlight Poetry

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

Recently, some of our Junior and Inter girls wrote poems about Camp Starlight in Creative Writing.  We were so impressed that we just have to share some of them!

Camp, camp is so fun.

I just love everyone!

I love you, you love me.

Camp Starlight is the place to be.

Juniors, Juniors HOT TO GO!

H-O-T-T-O-G-O!

That’s what division I’m in if you don’t now.

Miles of smiles,

Stay for whiles.

When you are having fun,

The day is pretty much done!

Camp Starlight is the place you should be,

And that’s the end of my poetry.—Danielle, Bunk 4

Camp is so fun

Because you see everyone.

Friends,Friends we sing so loud,

And that makes us very proud!

Swimming, swimming, swimming in the lake,

It’s a nice, fun school break.

Candy, Candy is so great,

I hope I’m not late late late!—Sara, Bunk 6

Camp, camp is a lot of fun

Because you are with everyone.

Dance, waterskiing, ceramics,

I wish I could do them everyday.

Come come come to Starlight.

You will  have lots of fun.

I love my bunk.  I love my friends.

I wish camp would never end!—Devyn, Bunk 2

Get off at Starlight in the afternoon.

This place makes me swoon.

Look at your bunks.  Say hi to your friends.

The fun and happiness never ends.

Opening ceremony is so sweet.

I want honor bunk.  Let’s keep the bunk neat.

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen,

Water, water, water,

I am my dad’s daughter.

Friday night bright

Inside or outside, it never goes till midnight.

Visiting Day parents are shown around.

When I see them, I make a loud sound.

Read the next poem about the other half,

It’s sure to make you laugh.—Lily, Bunk 14

Camp Starlight is 41-3 So Far in Wayne County Leagues!

Sunday, July 8th, 2012

Every once in a while, we have to take the opportunity to brag a bit and our campers’ performance in the Wayne County Camp Association leagues so far this season is DEFINITELY one of those instances.  As of this blog, our record is an unbelievable 41 wins and only 3 losses!  Of course, a significant amount of credit goes not only to all of our great athletes but our outstanding Program Heads and Specialists, who work with our campers everyday to improve their skills and help them learn to play competitively but friendly.  If you can’t already tell, we are very proud of our Athletics here at Camp Starlight, and are simply blown away by the results of the hard work that our campers put in to being the best they can be when representing Camp Starlight in athletic competitions and the dedication and passion that our staff brings to their roles here on camp.  Excellent job, everyone!  Here’s to continuing a great season!

Archery is a Bullseye with Camp Starlight Campers

Saturday, July 7th, 2012

Archery has been a staple of sleepaway camps since their inception.  Perhaps it’s the nostalgia of this notion that makes it perennial favorite among Camp Starlight campers.  As an activity that’s not offered as widely in school programs, its popularity endures.   There is also a very peaceful quality that consistently makes it a hit with Camp Starlight campers.   One not need be a premiere level athlete in order to be good at archery.  Rather, it’s an activity that requires focus and precision.  Campers tend to enjoy the more cerebral emphasis of archery amidst their more physical activities.  Campers also find it just plain fun!  A little bit of competition among friends to see who can make it the closest to the center of that target always makes for a fun archery period.

The Benefits of Counselor Assistant Programs

Friday, July 6th, 2012

A recent article in the New York Times examined a father’s struggle with his daughter’s choice to fore go a summer internship to spend the summer working at her former summer camp.  Upon first hearing of his daughter’s choice, the father was concerned that the camp counselor experience would not ultimately prove substantial on a resume.  However, upon further consideration, he concluded that the internship experience was overrated. Based on statistical data, those who have intern experience do not secure jobs any faster than those who do not, and  the well-rounded experience his daughter would gain while working at camp added to the benefit of being able to delay the start of an “office job.”

Even before entering college, former campers who’ve become too old to attend camp decide to enter their camp’s.  As the college student who was the subject of the her father’s New York Times debate, many parents of former campers find themselves wondering about the benefits of counselor assistant programs versus a year off from camp, teen tours, or a more traditional summer job.  In addition to providing a very good transition from the role of camper to staff member, counselor in training programs are a great foundation for college.

College is a clean slate for students.  When students leave high school, they also leave behind their reputations and accomplishments.  Like college is a place at which students have the opportunity to demonstrate that they attained the skills to succeed in college through high school, counselor assistants have the opportunity to demonstrate that years of being a camper have given them the skills required to be a good staff member.  As part campers, part staff members, they have opportunity to take initiative and show responsibility by performing some of the duties of a camp counselor.  In doing so, they also gain entry level work experience.  They are accountable for performing up to the standards set by their camp leadership, they report to multiple supervisors at various levels, and by nature of working twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week with children, they must perform jobs responsibilities with immediacy.

A counselor assistant program is also a great way to help teenagers choose a college.  Since counselor assistant or counselor in training groups tend to be smaller than other camp age groups, the smaller setting can help students decide whether they prefer a larger college with more students, like those of their younger camping days, or a smaller, more intimate setting like that of their counselor in training or counselor assistant group.  Living at camp is also time away from home that helps those thinking of college determine whether living away from home in a dorm setting or living at home while attending a local college is more to their preference.

Ultimately, regardless of whether a former camper decides to do a traditional internship once he or she gets to college, a year or two spent as a counselor in training or a counselor assistant could help build some of the most helpful tools for making some very important, life impacting decisions regarding college and work.

The Adventures of Cooper the Camp Dog

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

The big man on campus here at Camp Starlight is arguably Cooper, an adorable malti-poo.  He goes on so many adventures around campus every day that our Senior girls suggested we start documenting some of them in a regular feature on the Camp Starlight blog.  We thought that was an excellent idea!  So, today, we bring you the account of his most recent adventure with, of course, the Senior girls.  Here is his write up:

“Hello, I’m Cooper.  Today I took a Field Trip with the Senior Girls to the Carriage House lawn.  They were working on their Spirit of Starlight song, so I helped them.  It was TONS of fun!  I especially liked lying on the lawn in the breeze while I helped.  The Spirit of Starlight is a very special Girls camp tradition here at Camp Starlight, and it’s coming up soon!  I would tell you what the Seniors’ song is about, but they told me that it’s a secret.  So I can’t.  After finishing the song, a few of the girls took me for a run around the field.  My adventure with the Senior girls was really fun!  I can’t wait to see who I get to hang with on my next adventure…”–Cooper

SWF: A Recap

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

For all of this year’s SWF teams, it was a night of romping around in a wrestling ring filled with…something slimy and orange.  The first match pit team Niko against Team Lachlyn and it wasn’t a match to determine which one was the cutest.  Honestly, could we really declare a winner in that battle?  It was a down and dirty showdown to see which team would emerge victorious—until next year.   The match was a close one but Team Lachlyn nudged Team Niko to come out on top.  The kitchen staff took on the maintenance staff in the next round.  It seems working in maintenance builds more muscle than working in the kitchen…at least for Omar.  Other battles included: The Avengers Battle Royal (The Incredible Hulk still knows how to take out his opponents!); a fight amongst the seven dwarfs for Snow White (Prince who?  This match was a charm for Sneezy.); the Camp Starlight Winter Staff versus—well—“other” camps (Let’s hear it for A. Lee, LJ, and Patrick!); and a Battle of the Bands with Lady Gaga coming out on top of One Direction, Justin Bieber, the Spice Girls, Nicki Minaj, and Kei$ha (Are we really surprised that the victor was someone who wears costumes made of meat?).  In the grand showdown, Jason was unable to hold onto his title for another year as Evan emerged the new SWF champion…And that’s your SWF 2012 recap!
