Earlier this week, the Camp Starlight population demonstrated its dedication to continuing to help those in need through their generous contributions in the annual Camp Starlight Stack the Caps event. Starlight staff and campers donated four more feet of caps to the Stack the Caps charity, which is sponsored by Camp Starlight! In the spirit of Starlight’s emphasis on community, the CA’s are also involved in a new project this year called “Paint the Caps”. Everyone is encouraged to bring more caps with them on Visiting Day. Let’s keep stacking those caps!

The Journey Toward One Mile Grows by Four More Feet!
Friday, July 16th, 2010Independence Day at Camp Starlight!
Tuesday, July 13th, 2010The Fourth of July was packed full of sunshine, excitement, and entertainment! Stars and stripes were worn all around camp, and the mood was energetic. The evening main event was SWF (Starlight Wrestling Federation), one the most anticipated evening events of the summer. The junior boys opened the show with the Annual Starlight Thumb Wrestling Competition final match against Head of Basketball, Matt Marinchick. The preliminary matches were held earlier in the day between all junior boys. The winner, Zach from Bunk 4, proved he was a real thumb wrestling pro by beating Matt in the final! The main event featured a showdown of nations between Australia, England, Peru, Canada, and the USA. In the spirit of the holiday, the U.S.A. eventually emerged victorious. Also featured were matches between SpongeBob Square Pants and Fanboy, Dr. Seuss and Sesame Street, The Past and The Future, Vampires and Werewolves, and Bridezilla versus her Bridesmaids. The Main Event was an epic battle of Upper and Lower Camps as represented by Jeff Malis and Jason Glick. Jason emerged victorious to take the belt for Lower Camp after a hard fought and entertaining battle. After the wrestling, the entire camp was treated to a magnificent fireworks display on the waterfront, really topping off a fun filled evening and a great celebration of July 4th!
Panic!
Monday, July 12th, 2010Panic is when you hear a riddle, and with your bunk, you figure it out. Then we dress up as the answer. We love the Harry Potter riddle the best. We dressed up as Harry Potter, Hermione, Ron, Ginny, and Hagrid. We have this activity in Junior Circle. It is run by Tracie and Paige, the division leaders. It is after dinner and free play. It is our last activity before we get ready for bed. Panic is so much fun!!!

Letter from Camp
Friday, July 9th, 2010Dear Lord Pickles,
Here I am at camp, lying on my magic carpet during beauty sleep hour. I am sharing our castle with Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty!! They are so pretty and really nice! Today, guess who I met? The Beast from Beauty and the Beast! He tried to eat me but don’t worry I got away. It was a close one. They didn’t mention he ate people in the movie. I also met the genie from Aladdin! He kind of messed up my wish… I wished for a hamburger but he turned me into a hamburger instead! I looked pretty good if I do say so myself. My counselors are Princess Fiona and Ursala. Ursala is so mean! Guess you can’t get the best one every time. Well I have to go. I miss you and I can’t wait for fairytale camp’s visiting day!
Love,
Flutters (a.k.a. Jessica)

Let’s Go Mets!
Monday, July 5th, 2010There was plenty of energy among the Debs and Plebes as they enjoyed a minor league baseball game between the Binghamton Mets and the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday, July 1st. Plenty of spirited cheers for the hometown team could be heard from the Camp Starlight section of the stadium. Ball Winkle, the Mets’ mascot, was popular, posing with campers for several photos. However, the two biggest heroes of the evening were Starlight’s own Seth Lieberman, who threw out the first pitch of the game, and Golf Specialist Chris Blackmore, who caught a free hotdog from the Running Cowboy.

Polar Bears Take The Plunge!
Friday, July 2nd, 2010What’s better than a dip in the Camp Starlight Lake? An early morning dip, or so the more than 200 campers and counselors who showed up for the first meeting of the Polar Bear Club at reveille on Monday, June 28th will tell you. Started last year by Camp Starlight’s very own Owner/Director, David Miller, and open to staff and campers alike, the Polar Bear Club has one requirement – and one requirement only – for membership: Everyday at reveille, make your way to the lake, jump into the water, and get out. For some it’s a test of wills. For others, it’s a refreshing wake up routine. For everyone who chooses to join, it’s just plain fun. So what’s the reward for fifty-two consecutive days of early morning dips? One awesome end of the summer party and a very special surprise gift to commemorate membership in the club (last year it was a Polar Bear Club embroidered beanie). Everybody in the water!

Good Ole’ College Days
Thursday, July 1st, 2010
There was plenty of school spirit abound after the brand new Camp Starlight College Days broke this morning. Campers were divided into teams representing Illinois, Northwestern, Michigan, and Wisconsin during a surprise field day event. Once everyone received their school colors (t-shirts), the teams engaged in an exciting morning of contests that included a cheer off, over and under competition, and relay races, among others. The enthusiasm was infectious and carried into the afternoon sports matches with plenty of team pride emanating from the fields and sidelines. But the competitions don’t end today! The Camp Starlight College Days playoffs will continue throughout the summer. So go orange, purple, blue, and red!

New Camper Day
Wednesday, June 16th, 2010Nearly 100 excited new campers and their families got New Camper Day 2010 off to a fun start with a “mini apache” followed by a game of Lumberjacks and Farmers. The girls took the first round while the boys won the second. The third and final round was a draw, tying the game. After David wished everyone a great day at lineup, as he does every day of camp, it was time for the Starlight Search and Challenge, which both Junior Boys and Girls unanimously agreed was their favorite activity of the day. Following an optional period during which campers got to sample a several popular Starlight programs such as Arts & Crafts, Basketball, Musical Theater, and Gymnastics, everyone enjoyed an indoor cookout before the final results of the Search and Challenge were announced: 3rd Place went to “Team Awesome”, “Team Michelle” took 2nd place, and “Team Lindsay” claimed victory. The day was a winner for everyone, though, as excited children and parents left saying they can’t wait to come back in a couple of weeks. We can’t wait to see everyone—new campers and returners—soon!

Do you have butterflies in your belly about that? Betcha they do, too! Don’t worry. As soon as you meet them, the butterflies go away and you’ll forget you ever even had them. - The Opening Night Show and Sing-Alongs

Your camp siblings are special friends. The three of you can talk to each other, attend special camp sibling events together, and cheer each other on during camp activities like Olympics. - Awesome evening activities and special events

Our two Lower Camp Head Counselors also happen to be two of the coolest, funnest, most adored people in camp. Along with the Lower Camp Division Leaders, ADLs, and counselor staff, they go out of their way during the summer to make sure that our Juniors and Inters have the most spectacular time of their lives. - Trips
