Soccer at Starlight

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

The soccer program at Camp Starlight is headed by Matt – now in his sixth summer here at camp.  Prior to camp he worked as Assistant Coach at Rockford College and is looking forward to starting a two year role at a new school in California in August.  Originally from the UK, Matt holds a teaching qualification in Sports Studies and obtained his Masters in Phys. Ed while at Rockford.  He returns “home” to Starlight every year because thinks we have the best campers in Wayne County, not to mention the impressive floodlit soccer field.

Matt is joined by six other coaches this summer, all working to provide the finest technical skills instruction as well as preparation for both tournaments and Wayne County games.  Regular coaching sessions place the emphasis on technique with a range of developmentally appropriate (but fun!) games.  Our intra-camp leagues also give our campers the experience and skills in positional awareness only possible in a game based environment.  We also have twelve to fourteen soccer teams playing in the Wayne County League each year and we are very proud of our consistent high achievements in our competitive games.

Jessica, an Upper Senior, loves playing soccer here and gives the program a real seal of camper approval.  So what does she think makes playing soccer here better than at home?  “The staff here give us the time and support to persevere in areas we want to improve.  Plus, Matt is so funny it makes training and playing really enjoyable.”

Today’s photo comes from the boys of bunk 2 who were looking at things a bit differently.  Clever idea to take a picture of someone taking a picture boys!

Tuxedo Tarts

This recipe uses the same ingredients for the cases as our quiche recipe but add in ½ cup sugar at the same time as the flour for a sweeter pastry.  They will then be filled with a rich custard filling.

To make them you will need:

Part-baked tart cases based on quiche recipe (no filling!)

1/3 cup flour

½ cup sugar

2 cups milk

2 beaten eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Mix the sugar, flour and salt in a saucepan.  Stir in the milk and vanilla extract and cook over a medium heat until it reaches boiling point.  Boil it for one minute and then remove from the heat.  Stir in half of the mixture into the eggs, then the other half and blend into a hot mixture in the saucepan.  Return the pan to the heat and bring to the boil again.

Place some chocolate chips in the bottom of the tart cases and then pour the custard mixture on top.  Place fresh fruit on the top to decorate – strawberries or grapes work well.  These can be served hot or cold and keep very well in the refrigerator.

Starlight 48 – Trails End 15

Sammy B and Molli B both had amazing performances as they led their team into Trails End and walked away with a victory.  Sammy led the scorers with a massive 22 points and 12 steals, and Molly added 10 points and 6 rebounds.  Starlight came out of the gates in a full court press and took a commanding 22-1 lead and never looked back.  They used amazing teamwork allowing every single player to score and their team defense was impenetrable.  They now eagerly await their next opponent in the Wayne County Championship.  Fantastic performance ladies!

Starlight 35 – Chenawanda 16

Once again Camp Starlight proved to be just a little bit too much for the competition.  The team was led to victory with a big double-double from Zach R who tallied up 12 points and 12 rebounds.  Right alongside him was Ethan E who added his 9 points and 5 assists.  Noah R, Oscar O and Sam K each scored four points and Max K scored the most enthusiastic two points of the game.  Starlight never trailed in this game and seemed to cruise to victory – they now await their next challenge.

Boys 10th/11th Grade Basketball (H)

Starlight 57 – Wayne 68

Corey H led the way in scoring with 18 points.  Derek K added 15 points and Sam B was also in double figures with 11.  Ben A and Jake S added 4 points apiece, with Justin B chipping in 3.  David G scored 2 points and Eric S led the way on defense with 3 blocks.  Starlight fought extremely hard to the very end in this high scoring game, but unfortunately could not turn things to their favor.  Well played boys.

Girls 8th/9th Grade Lacrosse (A)

Starlight 19 – Tyler Hill 12

Girls’ lacrosse won an impressive match against Tyler Hill.  Caroline W scored 4 goals with Megan B, Dana G and Brandi R all scoring 3 each.  Megan B also contributed 3 assists.  Carli G, Devin B and Liv S all played outstanding defense throughout.  Great game girls!

Senior Spotlight #4

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Hello, my name is Kyle S and I’m currently sitting with my friends Carly and Sylvie and we have decided to render on the past times of Camp Starlight.  Throughout the past seven summers here, the meaning of camp has transformed tremendously.

Arriving on this beautiful campus seven summers ago, I came as a stranger, not knowing what to expect.  Would I make friends?  Could I last seven weeks away from my parents?  Will I be able to play sports several hours of the day?  Questions similar to these flooded my eight year old mind but within that same summer I had made my best friends and now, in 2011 those girls have transitioned into my sisters.

As an Upper Senior I can laugh at the questions plaguing my young junior mind.  My friends are my sisters, seven weeks isn’t enough time away from my parents and I wish there were more hours in the day to do the things I enjoy so much!  Camp has easily been the best thing I have ever experienced and I am so thankful for my time spent here.

Starlight 9 – Equinunk 14

10th and 11th grade boys lacrosse took a tough loss today, losing to Equinunk 14-9.  Noah L played extremely well in goal with ten saves, and Derrick K contributed four goals.  Unfortunately Equinunk pulled away in the 4th quarter and Starlight were not able to bring the score-line back.  All players remained determined to the end and should be congratulated on their true spirit.

The Day I Learned to Rollerblade

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

Before camp I did not know how to rollerblade. On the 2nd day of camp I got on the rink and I tried to skate around.  I fell a few times then the hockey coach picked me up and we skated around the rink.  He was holding my hand and that made me confident.  Then he said, “Now you try,” and I was racing around the rink and from that day on I was really good.  Now rollerblading is one of my favorite sports.  This is my first year at camp and first ever blog.
