Boys 9th Grade Tennis (H)

Starlight 4 – Chenawanda 0

A great result for our 9th grade boys tennis team.  The team jumped out to early leads in all games and stayed focused for the entire match.  Even though some of the matches were close, the boys hung in there and performed extremely well.  Special mentions go to the doubles team of Ian G and Harris W and the singles players Kyle G and Zach F.

The 7th grade and under boys lacrosse team won against Lohikan in convincing fashion.  Michael H (4 goals), Ethan E (3 goals), Jared B (3 goals), Noah G (3 goals) and Josh W (3 goals) led the scoring.  Garrett S and Jared F played excellent defense and dominated ground balls and transition.  A well deserved win.

Girls 8th Grade Basketball (A)

Starlight 10 – Lavi 30

The final score in this game really does not reflect the gutsy determination and team effort displayed by the girls throughout.  Starlight played very hard throughout the game, chasing loose balls and diving on the floor to try and gain control of the game.  Special mentions need to go to Samantha B with 4 points and 9 rebounds, Georgie E with 4 points and Lauren Z 2 points.  A great team effort ladies!

Boys 5th Grade Basketball (A)

Starlight 27 – Nesher 28

Camp Starlight entered the 4th quarter down 9 points but with great defense and scoring by Ryan K, the team cut the deficit to just 1 point at final score.  The team played with great effort and intensity the entire game and worked so hard to pull the score back, they should all be commended on their performance.  Players to note are Ryan K with 15 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds, Max K had 2 points and 2 rebounds and Dylan T had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Girls 8/9th Grade Lacrosse (A)

Starlight 13 – Wayne 11

The girls stayed impressively calm throughout the match and worked together to keep the lead and win.  Brandi R scored 4 goals, Megan B scored 3, Caroline W scored 2 with Devin B, Dana G, Hanna R and Carli G all scoring one goal each.  Sydney T made 3 saves in goal.  Smart plays by all the girls.

What a great game to kick off the season! Michael H, Sam S and Jacob K led the offensive attack with 5 points each. Ethan E and Matthew F also scored while Jake M had a shut out at net. This is a team that can’t be stopped! The final score was 12-0 in favor of Starlight!  Way to go boys!

Boys 8th Grade Basketball (H)

Starlight 46 – Wayne 42

This was a close game which saw Starlight trailing for the first three quarters of the game but holding a 35-34 lead on entering the fourth quarter.  The team then switched into a full-court press which seemed to be the game changing decision.  With 6.7 seconds left into the game Seneca Lake took its’ final attempt and Austin K sealed the game with the final rebound and free-throws.  This was a well fought game with some impressive scores spread throughout all the team members.

Girls 7th Grade Basketball (H)

Starlight took an early lead and continued to widen the gap throughout the first half.  The score was 38-4 at half time when the coaches instituted a “six pass” rule.  The high scorers were S. Burch, A. Shapiro, M. Breslow and L. Friedman with eight a piece.  Other all-round contributors included E. Lisser, L. Reiss, B. Labonski, J.Epstein, J. Kahan, J. Rubin and L. Starlight 3 – Poyntelle 1

The girls started the 2011 season as reigning champs and faced a team that they had beaten 7-0 the previous year.  A much improved Poynetelle visited Alumni Field and even though Starlight controlled much of the game, it was certainly harder work than in 2010.  Reiss up top made some fine runs, supported ably by Lisser who ensured that the Poynetelle defenders did not have too much time on the ball.  Breslow and Shapiro kept control of the center of the field with Burstein and Labonski making some fine runs down the flanks.  At the back Cohen, Guttman and Mach ensured that most of the Poynetelle attacks fizzled out before they could amount to much, and from this base Starlight took a well-earned two goal lead at the half.  The second half followed a similar pattern to the first although towards the end of the game Poynetelle snuck a goal and looked to make a game of it until Starlight hit a third on the break from Reiss.  A good opener and now Starlight await either Island Lake, Lohikan or Westmont in the next round.

Boys 10/11th Grade Soccer (H)

Starlight 1 – Wayne 5

The 10th grade boys faced a stern challenge in their opening game having to play a Wayne team composed solely of 11th graders.  An early Wayne goal effectively set the tone for the rest of the game but to their credit, the 10th graders continually hustled making their older opposition work for their goals.  Two Wayne goals late in the first half did not deter Starlight from starting the second half in a positive fashion, and when Wolff was brought down in the area Greenbaum stepped up to reduce the deficit to two.  Starlight pressured well in the second half and Chirls hit the post and Greenbaum had two free kicks scrambled away by the Wayne keeper.  Two further goals brought the final score to 5-1 although Starlight never let up and continued to push forward until the final whistle.  Despite the scoreline Starlight put forth a good effort and Chernov, Cohen and Kahn at the back made life hard for the Wayne forwards, while midfielders Breslow and Wolff pressured their opposite numbers throughout the game.  For some this may be the last game played in Starlight colors, but this team has won the championship game three times in six attempts, finishing second on another occasion.  And that’s not too shabby.  Well done boys.

Girls 5th Grade Soccer (H)

Starlight vs. Tioga

The girls made very light work of Tioga starting the game at a frenetic pace and pinning their opposition in their own half for most of the game.  On the odd occasion when Tioga were able to break on Starlight’s goal, Spar, Tillinger and Lev gave short shrift to the opposing forwards.  In midfield Greenwald and Jaffe continually broke on Tioga’s goal although the early goals were scored by Chernett playing as a forward.  A brief cameo in the forward position by Scherr netted three quick goals and by this point the game was ended as a contest.  Next up are Lavi, a team Starlight beat 8-2 in 2010, although the girls are already working hard to ensure that they get past Lavi so they can get another crack at a Chenawanda team that knocked them out of last year’s competition 1-0.

Girls 7th Grade Lacrosse (H)

Starlight 17 – Chenawanda 9

The 7th grade girls played a great game and came away with a big victory against Chenawanda.  Olivia R scored 7 goals while Andie S and Lindsay F added 4 and 3 goals respectively.  Brooke H made her debut in the goal and registered 10 saves.  A superb team effort from all the girls.

Invitational Girls 8/9th Grade Volleyball

Today we came in third place at the Camp Wayne Invitational Tournament.  In our first match of the morning Sara S served 17 in a row to lead us to victory against Camp Morasha.  Other key players were Hanna R and Dana G playing great defense.  As we advanced in pool play we beat Camp Lohikan to make it into the final rounds of play.  Jenna K and Melissa S served well in that match.  In our third round of play we were defeated by Camp Westmont but bounced back to play a thrilling match against Tioga that had everyone on the edge of their seats.  We played as a true team and had a great day!

Starlight 13 – Lohikan 1

Runners-up in 2010, the boys went to work earlier today against local rivals Lohikan and wasted no time in showing why they are fast becoming one of Starlight’s top prospects for future soccer success.  Kansler and Honig did fine work at the back with Honig making some fine forward runs and coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions.  In midfield Meinhoff, Kessler and Baim made light work of Lohikan’s midfield line continually playing balls into wide positions as well as driving towards the top of the 18 yard area and firing shots in from distance.  Up top Gallant and Strober mesmerized their markers and the game was one way traffic aside from a couple of forays by Lohikan’s boy from Brazil who scored their only goal of the game.  The final score line was 13-1 in Starlight’s favor, and the boys now await the winner of the Wayne/Chenawanda game.

The Camp Starlight 9th Grade boys basketball team held off a furious comeback by Wayne in a first round Wayne County Tournament game.  Hunter A led the Starlight squad with 14 points and 9 rebounds, while Kyle G led the offense effectively with 7 assists.  Starlight quickly jumped out to a 12-4 lead early in the 2nd quarter and eventually extended it to 31-20 early in the 4th quarter using a high-powered fast break attack and ferocious offense putbacks.  The Wayne squad cut the lead to two points with just a few minutes to go but Lance G and Daniel P sealed the game with clutch free throws at the end.

Boys 7th Grade Tennis (H)

Starlight 5 – Chenawanda 0

The team were able to get an early lead in all of the sets and Chenawanda simply never had the chance to get back into the match.  Starlight kept the pressure on throughout and just did not let up.  The team played exceptionally well throughout and all team members should be congratulated on this superb result.

Girls 8th Grade Softball (H)

Starlight 8 – Tioga 1

This was a great game by the 8th grade girls.  Offense was on fire by all the girls and they secured 8 runs.  Defense held Tioga to just a single run and the team enjoyed their first Wayne County win of the season.

Boys 6th Grade Basketball (H)

Starlight 32 – Morasha 30

It was a close game from start to finish and neither team led by more than four points the entire game.  Starlight started off slow but picked up the pace as Zach R began to dominate inside with 14 rebounds and Ethan E had 8 assists.  Noah R came out in full force with 11 points.  As the fourth quarter began to wind down the score was tied.  Morasha took and missed a shot.  Zach R got the rebound, passed it to Ethan E who dribbled up the court between two defenders for a step back jumper that put Starlight up by 2 points with 1.3 seconds left!  Starlight held on to win by 2.  Good one boys!

Girls 10th/11th Grade Lacrosse (A)

Starlight 13 – Blue Ridge 8

The girls showed real Starlight spirit and worked as a true team to win.  They pulled away from a one goal lead to a five goal win in the second half – the girls hustled and showed enormous enthusiasm.  Special mentions need to go to Hannah who stepped up to play goal and had a game full of saves.  Brooke R led the team with five goals, whilst Allie K scored three times.  Diana S and Sarah E each had three assists.  A superb effort by the girls!
