Girls 7th Grade Soccer (H)

Starlight 3 – Poyntelle 1

The girls started the 2011 season as reigning champs and faced a team that they had beaten 7-0 the previous year.  A much improved Poynetelle visited Alumni Field and even though Starlight controlled much of the game, it was certainly harder work than in 2010.  Reiss up top made some fine runs, supported ably by Lisser who ensured that the Poynetelle defenders did not have too much time on the ball.  Breslow and Shapiro kept control of the center of the field with Burstein and Labonski making some fine runs down the flanks.  At the back Cohen, Guttman and Mach ensured that most of the Poynetelle attacks fizzled out before they could amount to much, and from this base Starlight took a well-earned two goal lead at the half.  The second half followed a similar pattern to the first although towards the end of the game Poynetelle snuck a goal and looked to make a game of it until Starlight hit a third on the break from Reiss.  A good opener and now Starlight await either Island Lake, Lohikan or Westmont in the next round.

Boys 10/11th Grade Soccer (H)

Starlight 1 – Wayne 5

The 10th grade boys faced a stern challenge in their opening game having to play a Wayne team composed solely of 11th graders.  An early Wayne goal effectively set the tone for the rest of the game but to their credit, the 10th graders continually hustled making their older opposition work for their goals.  Two Wayne goals late in the first half did not deter Starlight from starting the second half in a positive fashion, and when Wolff was brought down in the area Greenbaum stepped up to reduce the deficit to two.  Starlight pressured well in the second half and Chirls hit the post and Greenbaum had two free kicks scrambled away by the Wayne keeper.  Two further goals brought the final score to 5-1 although Starlight never let up and continued to push forward until the final whistle.  Despite the scoreline Starlight put forth a good effort and Chernov, Cohen and Kahn at the back made life hard for the Wayne forwards, while midfielders Breslow and Wolff pressured their opposite numbers throughout the game.  For some this may be the last game played in Starlight colors, but this team has won the championship game three times in six attempts, finishing second on another occasion.  And that’s not too shabby.  Well done boys.

Girls 5th Grade Soccer (H)

Starlight vs. Tioga

The girls made very light work of Tioga starting the game at a frenetic pace and pinning their opposition in their own half for most of the game.  On the odd occasion when Tioga were able to break on Starlight’s goal, Spar, Tillinger and Lev gave short shrift to the opposing forwards.  In midfield Greenwald and Jaffe continually broke on Tioga’s goal although the early goals were scored by Chernett playing as a forward.  A brief cameo in the forward position by Scherr netted three quick goals and by this point the game was ended as a contest.  Next up are Lavi, a team Starlight beat 8-2 in 2010, although the girls are already working hard to ensure that they get past Lavi so they can get another crack at a Chenawanda team that knocked them out of last year’s competition 1-0.

Girls 7th Grade Lacrosse (H)

Starlight 17 – Chenawanda 9

The 7th grade girls played a great game and came away with a big victory against Chenawanda.  Olivia R scored 7 goals while Andie S and Lindsay F added 4 and 3 goals respectively.  Brooke H made her debut in the goal and registered 10 saves.  A superb team effort from all the girls.

Invitational Girls 8/9th Grade Volleyball

Today we came in third place at the Camp Wayne Invitational Tournament.  In our first match of the morning Sara S served 17 in a row to lead us to victory against Camp Morasha.  Other key players were Hanna R and Dana G playing great defense.  As we advanced in pool play we beat Camp Lohikan to make it into the final rounds of play.  Jenna K and Melissa S served well in that match.  In our third round of play we were defeated by Camp Westmont but bounced back to play a thrilling match against Tioga that had everyone on the edge of their seats.  We played as a true team and had a great day!

Boys 5th Grade Soccer (A)

Starlight 13 – Lohikan 1

Runners-up in 2010, the boys went to work earlier today against local rivals Lohikan and wasted no time in showing why they are fast becoming one of Starlight’s top prospects for future soccer success.  Kansler and Honig did fine work at the back with Honig making some fine forward runs and coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions.  In midfield Meinhoff, Kessler and Baim made light work of Lohikan’s midfield line continually playing balls into wide positions as well as driving towards the top of the 18 yard area and firing shots in from distance.  Up top Gallant and Strober mesmerized their markers and the game was one way traffic aside from a couple of forays by Lohikan’s boy from Brazil who scored their only goal of the game.  The final score line was 13-1 in Starlight’s favor, and the boys now await the winner of the Wayne/Chenawanda game.
