Camp Starlight Wins Wayne County Golf Tournament

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

Camp Starlight offers a number of different sports, with Golf being one of the most popular.

The passion and experience of our campers shone through yesterday at the Wayne County Golf Championship. As the weather heated up, so did our campers. Team Starlight dominated the course.

Taking to the Hancock Golf Club course, our campers fought a close battle. Nathan W had the best performance of the day with a massive 25 points – the equivalent of a two over par gross. Dylan T also had a solid day, amassing an impressive 20 points.

It was a successful day all round, with JP and Cogan giving a notable performance in the ‘Lower’ category. Despite it being neck and neck, the lower boys managed to steal victory by just one point.

Another impressive victory for Team Starlight!

Wayne County Girls Swim Meet

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-07-21 at 1.00.01 PMFollowing last week’s victory at the Wayne County Boys Swim Meet, Starlight came away with another amazing win at the Girls Swim Meet earlier today, finishing in second place.

The atmosphere was certainly tense, but the Starlight campers gave an astounding performance, with Julia H receiving the fastest time of the day. Upper Junior, Sarah T also had a remarkable round, winning first place in the junior division backstroke. Senior camper, Francesca G performed amazingly well with a very strong and notable performance.

Appropriately, the sun was shining as each camper cheered on their team mates in what was another incredible performance by Team Starlight.

Visiting Day at Camp Starlight

Sunday, July 19th, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-07-19 at 8.19.19 AMVisiting Day is always a special day at Camp Starlight, but it also signifies that we’re almost half way through the summer – it seems it was just yesterday that we were welcoming bus loads of campers old and new to Starlight. Yesterday at 10:00 am the camp road was lined with smiling parents excited to see their children and at 11:00 am the floodgates opened as parents swarmed the paths towards the bunks.

Over the past few weeks, our campers haven’t only been busy writing up their Visiting Day wish lists, but they have also been hard at work on various different projects around camp. Aside from the masses of hugs and sweets, one of the things that makes visiting day extraordinary each year is that our campers are extremely proud to show off what they have been working on.  Campers couldn’t wait to show their loved ones our cool new music studio, and to show them what they have been hard at work on in Arts and Crafts and Woodworking.

As the sun always shines at Camp Starlight, it was appropriate that the sun came out in force yesterday and we had the perfect weather for Visiting Day. Following boating trips on the lake, enjoying a delicious cookout for lunch, and playing games of Volleyball and Basketball, sadly Visiting Day had to come to a close. However, it was another incredible and overwhelming Visiting Day at Camp Starlight and we can’t wait to see what the next four weeks bring!

The Curse of the Witch Scavenger Hunt

Thursday, July 16th, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-07-16 at 1.56.55 PMAs the sun went down over the idyllic lake last night, Camp Starlight was visited by a mysterious and wicked sorcerer who cast an evil spell over the camp. The malevolent figure brought with him a tyranny of supernatural creatures including Genies, Witches, and Wizards who roamed the camp. As the spell was cast on the camp, it was up to the campers to come out in force to oust the evil sorcerer.

Screen Shot 2015-07-16 at 1.57.40 PMAs darkness descended, the campers dressed up as supernatural creatures to fool the sorcerer into thinking he had taken control of Starlight. Quickly, the Starlighters worked together to collect numerous ingredients to dethrone the master. However, the campers did not have an easy job to undertake, as they had to visit each of the sorcerer’s troublesome companions and complete a difficult task.

Despite the problematic situation, our talented campers succeeded in collecting all of the treasured possessions and returning happiness, laughter, and sunshine to Camp Starlight, in what happened to be a thrilling evening!

Screen Shot 2015-07-14 at 1.44.10 PMBeginning Junior summer, campers dream of the day when they will finally be Upper Seniors.  As young campers, the Uppers seem to have it all.  Now those little girls ARE the Upper Seniors, and even some of them can’t believe it.  “I thought I’d feel older,” said Upper Senior Alexa W.  “It’s strange and amazing to think that I’m now the role model I always looked up to in lower camp.”  And that pressure does not escape them.  As Upper Seniors, these girls have several new responsibilities.  Upper Senior Ava S. reflected on her experience as an Upper during Spirit of Starlight.  “It’s very different; We’re in charge.  It’s something we did really independently, so the pressure was on.”  This responsibility was certainly not a bad thing, however, seeing as the “Aca Seniors” did an unbelievable job at Spirit of Starlight.  Their division leader, Nora, is extraordinarily proud of them.  “This is a VERY creative bunch.  They’re super spirited and up for anything!” These qualities are what make this group of Uppers really stand out.  Counselor Gabby, who also got to see these girls as lower seniors last summer, is amazed by this entire division.  “It makes me so proud to see how much each of these girls really care for this camp.”

We’ve Got The Spirit Yes We Do!

Wednesday, July 15th, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-07-14 at 1.41.37 PMSpirit of Starlight is one of the best nights of the summer for sure! Girls’ Camp gathered in the Rec Hall for Camp Starlight’s annual Dance and Cheer Competition. Voices could be heard all the way out at the second lake as each division competed in an epic battle of spirit. Leading off the night were the Upper Inter Arabian Nights with Division Leader Janelle arriving on a magic carpet and Emma as Abu. From another planet, the Upper Deb’s Space Odyssey aliens gave an extraordinary performance. The Junior Girls followed the yellow brick road all the way to our hearts with huge smiles as they sang and danced to the Wizard of Oz. Straight from prehistoric times came the Jurassic Lower Debs with an enthusiastic performance with their mascot triceratops. The Lower Inter’s were next with a good ole’ fashion hoe down in “western” rain boots. Closing the night, the “Aca-Seniors” were certainly pitch perfect as they performed their own version of the cup song. Each division presented their incredible banners and themed cakes which everyone enjoyed. While the judges deliberated the CA’s performed an incredible dance and showed off their own spirit. Allison Miller announced this year’s winner THE JURASSIC LOWER DEBS and they proudly accepted the Spirit of Starlight Star!
