10 Ways to Know You are Ready to Get Back to Camp Starlight

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

As the New Year starts, we at the Camp Starlight winter office find that the excitement of Summer 2012 approaching sometimes takes over in rather strange ways! We compiled a list of “10 Ways to Know You are Ready to Get Back to Camp Starlight”.  We’re certain some of you may be having these same experiences:

  • When you hear a popular song on the radio, you get weird looks because you are singing the lyrics to former Camp Starlight Sing songs.
  • You shout “Freeze!” at the family dinner table as soon as you are done eating.
  • You download “Reveille” on iTunes to use as your alarm clock tone.
  • You request raviolis for your birthday dinner.
  • You write “GS” as your elective on your class schedule form.
  • You loudly tell your classmates to “Have a great day!” after saying the Pledge of Allegiance in school.
  • You find yourself humming “Friends, Friends, Friends” as you scan through your summer camp pictures from last summer.
  • You tell your siblings the dress for the day will be shorts and a light top.
  • You stand at your door at bedtime and send your family off to sleep with a Jason Glick “Taps Speech”.
  • When you get off the school bus, you look for someone with a bunk list to tell you where to go.

We hope you find yourself getting more and more excited for Summer 2012, and we  cannot wait to get back to camp in a few short months!

We at Camp are Thankful for…

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Every year around this time we pause to reflect on those aspects of our lives about which we are most thankful.  To celebrate this turkey day, we thought we’d share what makes us most thankful for summer camp:

Our camp families: Without our campers, there would be no summer camp.  We’re thankful you value your summer camp experiences so much that you return every summer, and that you continue to build and carry on the traditions that make America’s Finest Summer Camps so special.

Our camp family: The unique family we are all a part of each summer.  The bonds that campers and staff create truly do last a lifetime.  We love every moment of the summer when we are laughing, playing, singing, and sharing together.

Camp Memories: Every year we bring home new memories that motivate us to make the next summer even more special than the previous.  Talking with our families and camp friends about our summers and sharing in each others’ unique experiences while at summer camp are some of our favorite times during the winter months.  They help us get over our “camp sickness” and carry us through those months between summers.  Speaking of camp friends…

Camp Friends: Every camper knows that camp friends are friends for life. Our camp friends share some very special memories that one can only get at summer camp.  Our camp friends are also great at helping us get through those ten months that we’re not at camp by reminding us of just how special summer camp is, whether it’s through the distance that makes seeing each other at camp every summer so special or the closeness of having a camp pal who  “gets it”.

Amazing Staff Members from all over the Globe: Summer Camps are only as good as their staff, and we’re thankful that we have some of the most amazing staff anywhere in the world.  Each summer, you come from all over the world and commit yourselves 24/7 to insuring our campers have a safe, amazing summer.  We know it’s hard work, and we are grateful that so many of you find the experience so gratifying that you return year after year.

The Breathtaking Scenery of Maine and Northeast Pennsylvania: We love where our camps are located almost as much as we love our camps.  The beautiful woodlands of Maine, the mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania, hiking paths, the lakes that are such a big part of our camp experiences and traditions, and the wildlife all make the perfect backdrops for our amazing campuses.

The Beautiful Campuses that are our Summer Homes: Just like the houses we live in the other ten months of the year, each of our summer homes has its own energy, homey feeling, and special places for gathering, playing or contemplating. We’re proud that ours are some of the most awesome facilities in camping and look forward to continuing to build and improve them each summer.  We know our campers eagerly await opening day when they finally get to see how camp has changed since the previous summer and what new additions might be waiting for them.

Our Year-Round Staff: Yes, even summer camp requires a staff to work year-round.  After each summer, they go back to their offices and immediately begin planning the next, thinking about what new programs we might add or how we might make existing ones better.  They begin traveling, recruiting new staff members.  They create newsletters, Tweets, and blogs.  They answer the phones when you call.  They plan the menus.  In short, they tirelessly build each amazing summer day by day.

Being a Part of Such an Iconic American Tradition:  All over the world, American summer camps are an icon of Americana.  They’re unique to America and so many have found them inspirational that there have been movies and television shows that feature them, as well as books and songs written about them.  We are also grateful that many of our international friends are beginning to see the value in the American summer camp experience and, increasingly, are joining us from all corners of the globe.

We hope this holiday season that we’ve inspired you to contemplate what it is about camp that you’re most thankful for and how it has enriched your life.  We encourage you to share those thoughts with us.  We’d love to hear them!

Happy Holidays, Everyone!

Camp Starlight Senses

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

It has been over 3 years since I last stood in Starlight, PA, since I last heard the call to lineup, since I last smelled the Rec Hall, since I last tasted the chocolate chip pancakes, since I last felt the grass at kiddy campus, since I last saw a bim bam by the lake. And yet, my “camp senses” are as strong as ever.

Just a few days ago, I smelled something familiar. It was the kind of subtle smell that most would sniff without giving it a second thought. But I couldn’t; I recognized this smell. Without much thought, I knew what it was: banquet dinner, with those fancy mashed potatoes. Instantly, I was taken back to the last week of camp, when everyone on campus is squeezed into the mess hall dressed to the nines to enjoy a special meal to end the summer. I remembered banquets past and far past, what I was wearing, who I sat next to, who spoke and who had a star dedicated. I remembered the way I felt about the summer ending soon. And then, as quickly as it had come, the smell and the memory were gone.

In the same way that we never forget the taste of our grandmother’s matzoh balls, we never shake the “senses” that surround us each and every day at camp. These days, when I build a campfire, I am reminded of the way we built it at Rope Burn. When I hear a PA announcement, I am reminded of my days working the HC. After so many years at my second home, all it takes is the slightest nudge of the senses to take me back. In a way, I never left.

Senior Spotlight #4

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Hello, my name is Kyle S and I’m currently sitting with my friends Carly and Sylvie and we have decided to render on the past times of Camp Starlight.  Throughout the past seven summers here, the meaning of camp has transformed tremendously.

Arriving on this beautiful campus seven summers ago, I came as a stranger, not knowing what to expect.  Would I make friends?  Could I last seven weeks away from my parents?  Will I be able to play sports several hours of the day?  Questions similar to these flooded my eight year old mind but within that same summer I had made my best friends and now, in 2011 those girls have transitioned into my sisters.

As an Upper Senior I can laugh at the questions plaguing my young junior mind.  My friends are my sisters, seven weeks isn’t enough time away from my parents and I wish there were more hours in the day to do the things I enjoy so much!  Camp has easily been the best thing I have ever experienced and I am so thankful for my time spent here.

Camp Memories – Alumni Blog #2

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

Dani S was writing in blog class today about how time seems to go by very differently at camp to when she’s at home.  To quote, “At Camp Starlight, the days are long but if you blink, you’ll miss a week,” and she couldn’t have put it more precisely.  Visiting Day is upon us already and it seems like only yesterday since the campers first got off the buses.  So, for those people who are no longer able to come to Camp Starlight, the memories are so vivid it seems like only yesterday since you were here, yet in the same way it seems like such a long time ago.

As Camp Starlight celebrates its 65th anniversary, we look around and see while campers and staff may come and go, they all leave their mark.  At the start of this summer there were 2,652 bunk plaques hung on the rafters in the dining hall.  From the ten bunks who started it all in 1947, to the 50 bunks we have today, every camper who has ever spent the season with us is literally ingrained into the fabric of the building.  Every time you look up you see a plaque you never noticed before, read new names and wonder who they were and what their time was like at camp.

This morning, David pointed out two stars which had been buried in the ground by the flagpole forty years ago to celebrate 25 years at Camp Starlight.  These were only discovered a couple of years ago and had been hidden in the flowerbed for safe-keeping.  They are now proudly on show for all to see and remind us of summers past.  This year we are collecting various pieces of camp memorabilia to go into the 65th anniversary time capsule for future generations to find.  Live for the present, remember the past and look for the future and you can be guaranteed that the best memento of camp life is the memories which will never die.

Senior Spotlight #3

As the sun set on the glistening lake, the fact that this would be my last summer as a camper finally came to fruition. We were finally Upper Seniors. Eight years of an exciting part of my life were finally leading up to a huge climax. Goosebumps lined my arms just at the thought of spending my 8th summer at camp. As every one of the Upper Senior Boys came out of the bus to experience their best summer yet, they were greeted by warm smiles and out-stretched arms. We were finally here, we were finally Upper Seniors. Being an Upper Senior meant a lot to us as a division and we were excited to get the summer well under way. Over the course of the two weeks that have transpired at camp, memories have already been created and friendships have been strengthened. We came to camp as friends, but we have already become brothers. The thought that this will be the last time our entire division both boys and girls, will be together is extremely upsetting. The friendships that I have created at camp and the bonds I’ve made with both staff and campers are held very close to my heart.  Camp Starlight is basically my childhood. I have come to this camp for as long as I can remember, and the thought that this could very well be my last summer is quite sad. I have grown up in this camp and learned many lessons along the way.  My friends and I have laughed and cried together, we have shared in moments which will stay with us forever, but most of all we have become a family together.

With thanks to Jonathan S for writing this blog.

Alumni blog #1

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

If you’ve ever spent the summer at Camp Starlight then the chances are that when the end of June comes around each year, your mind starts to wander back to those days spent in the gorgeous Pocono Mountains.  Once you’ve been part of camp then it has a special place in your heart which never leaves you.

Just because our alumni can’t be here with us in person each year, doesn’t mean that they can’t continue to be a part of Camp Starlight.  Just look at the plaques on the rafters of the dining hall and every one of you has a place forever here.   You form part of the traditions and spirit of Camp Starlight which the campers here today enjoy, not forgetting you’re part of the ever growing Starlight family.

We will be running a special blog throughout the summer which will hopefully bring those memories flooding back to you and make you feel like you’re almost here too.

The photo illustrating this blog was requested by Shelley Shapiro Nolan who joined as a camper aged just seven in 1947 and rose through the ranks to become a counselor, spending her last summer here in 1959.  Hope you like it Shelley!

Senior Spotlight #2

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Today Alexa M, Allix C and Hannah G share with us their feelings about entering their last summer as a camper at Camp Starlight.  Thank you ladies!

Being an Upper Senior is a big spot to step into as the oldest campers at Camp Starlight. One of the most important roles Upper Seniors must take on is to be role models. It is important to remember that the younger campers look up to the older ones, so being spirited, optimistic, and responsible will help to make these seven weeks even better than the year before. This summer, to probably each and every Upper Senior camper, will be most memorable. Some activities that are exciting to us include Camp Rules, Olympics, our big trip to Cleveland, Ohio, sleeping in the Lakehouse/Lodge, and many more. The summer is bittersweet because as we enjoy all of the great activities camp has to offer, we also must say goodbye to some friends that may not come back to camp in years to follow. In the Upper Senior girls’ “song” that they sang at the opening campfire, the lyrics say, “We have had the time of our lives, and I will not forget the faces left behind.” Camp Starlight creates memories and friendships that will last a lifetime, and every summer gets better and better as we have the “times of our lives”. Each camper is loving camp so far, and is anticipating the rest of the summer that has yet to come.
