How many campers attend Starlight?
Our camp consists of 220 boys and 220 girls, ranging in age from 7-15.
The vast majority of campers return to Camp Starlight year after year
as there is a strong sense of community and closeness among campers and
staff.
How many staff do you have and what are their qualifications?
The staff consists of professional educators, coaches and upper-level
college and graduate students. A 3:1 camper to counselor ratio is maintained.
The minimum staff age is 20 years old or having finished one’s sophomore
year in college. Junior counselors have previous camper experience. Departments
are headed by professionals in their respective fields and many of them
return to Starlight summer after summer. We also have Head Counselors,
Assistant Head Counselors, Division Leaders and Unit Leaders working directly
with the campers and staff on a daily basis. Counselors are carefully
selected by the directors for their ability to provide an encouraging,
caring and supportive environment and for their skills in teaching and
coaching. Thorough screening and reference checks are conducted on each
staff member. All staff members participate in an intensive pre-season
training program.
What is a brother/sister camp?
Our brother/sister program allows the girls and boys to enjoy separate
activities during the day with all the elements of a single sex camp with
the advantages of being together for meals and many evening programs and
special events. Siblings can see each other at line up in the mornings
and evenings, meals, free-play following dinner and all-camp evening activities
such as theatrical productions. Our camper population is generally divided
equally between girls and boys. The living accommodations for the boys
and girls are located on opposite sides of the campus.
What
is the program?
The best way to describe a camper’s summer at Starlight is to explain
how the athletics, outdoor adventure, fine arts and crafts, performing
arts and water sports all combine to provide a well-rounded experience.
Each camper has two morning and two afternoon activity periods with his/her
own bunk and one elective period in the morning and one in the afternoon.
The morning elective period is selected weekly and allows for more intensive
instruction and program time. Super Sixth is a daily option scheduled
for the last period of the day. Campers choose their Super Sixth the evening
before and make their choice from a select list of activities, which always
includes General Swim. This is a time for campers to improve on their
athletic skills, finish projects, try-out and practice for teams or take
a dip in the lake. Senior campers have the flexibility to incorporate
more individual choices into their program.
What are the living arrangements like?
Camp Starlight offers cabins or "bunks" that incorporate the
comforts of home with the rustic nature of camping. Each bunk, which houses
8-12 campers and 2-3 counselors, is equipped with beds and dressers in
the main living room, closets for clothes and gear in the back room and
cubbies for toiletries in the bathroom. Each bunk has a hot water heater,
smoke alarm, front and back entrances, outside clothes line, loft for
storage, windows, electric outlets, two toilets and 1-2 showers. The front
of each bunk faces inward towards a semi-circle with a view of the lake,
designed to promote cohesiveness among divisions.
How
is the food served, and what choices will my child have?
Camp Starlight’s Dining Hall is situated in the center of camp overlooking
the first lake and separates the two campuses. It is also home to thousands
of bunk plaques, the first of which dates back to 1947. Boys and girls
eat on separate sides of the dining hall by bunk, with our youngest campers
in their own part of the dining hall. Older campers eat in a separate
seating. Our Kitchen and Dining Room is kosher. Breakfast and dinner are
served family style with the addition of bagel/cereal bars at breakfast
and salad/pasta or potato bars at dinner. Lunch is served buffet style
and also features an extensive salad bar, homemade soups and fresh fruit.
Campers have the option of picnicking outside for lunch. There is a mid-afternoon
"fruit break". Once a week there is a cookout held for the entire
camp at our outdoor barbeque overlooking the countryside. The outdoor
barbeque is also the location for our breakfast cookouts, which rotates
from division to division throughout the summer. Candy and other light
snacks are available from the canteen during the day or evenings as scheduled
by division.
Is Starlight affiliated with a certain religion?
The majority of our campers come from Jewish families, but Camp Starlight
welcomes all religions. There is a Friday night service that is attended
by all staff members and campers.
